Rose Tremain lands novel award

British author Rose Tremain has landed the Orange Prize for women writers with The Road Home, the tale of an East European immigrant grappling with the challenges of life in London.

"This was a powerfully imagined story and a wonderful feat of emotional empathy told with great warmth and humor," said chair of the judges Kirsty Lang when awarding the $US60,000 prize to Tremain.

It took the judges three hours to pick the winner and their final choice was a unanimous decision.

Tremain's 10th novel had been hot favourite with bookmakers to land the prize which often stokes controversy among literary critics and authors. It is awarded to the best novel of the year written in English by a woman.

Novelist Kingsley Amis once said he would not care to win the Orange Prize if he were a woman, while female author A.S. Byatt complained that the award "ghettoized" women.

After receiving her prize, Tremain said of carping critics who lambast the prize: "Stop being so grumpy."

Noting that Doris Lessing had won the latest Nobel Prize for Literature and that Britain's Booker and Costa book awards had both gone to women writers this year, she said "I think there is a lot to cheer."

Tremain, who was shortlisted for the Orange Prize in 2004, has already been garlanded with several literary awards - from the Whitbread Novel Award to the Prix Femina Etranger.

Hero of The Road Home is Lev, who travels to Britain with no job prospects, little money and few words of English.

He finds the British deeply strange - with their hostile streets, clannish pubs and obsession with celebrity - but London offers an alluring new life against all the odds.

Tremain said she got very attached to the hero of her novel.

"Sympathy with a character is important," she said at the awards ceremony.

Asked what had motivated her to write about immigration, Tremain said: "This is a subject which is really in the air and something which we feel slightly schizophrenic about and perhaps anxious.

"So I wanted to do something about immigration in this country. It was question of finding the story and having a story that would work so that we are not just looking at the protagonist but he is looking at us."

Girls Aloud - Coyle Lights Up Us Candle Shop Empire

GIRLS ALOUD star NADINE COYLE is set to open a chain of candle shops in the U.S.

The singer, 22, who currently resides in Los Angeles, already has a Mexican restaurant and a string of properties to her name, but now wants to expand the business into a chain of shops Stateside.

She says, "I'm so excited about it. L.A.'s the perfect place for it too as people love to get pampered. I've already got my brother-in-law to create the decor. He's an artist and does amazing canvasses, so it will be a proper family business - and really personal.

"I've got my mum to run it while I'm away working with the band."

But Coyle insists her business acumen won't ever come before her career with the chart-topping girl band: "There's no way I'm quitting the band. The candle shop and my businesses are something else I love to do. I'm having such a laugh with the band."

Kelly Asks For Further Delay In Child Pornography Trial

LATEST: Troubled R+B star R. KELLY has launched a last-minute bid to have his child pornography trial delayed again.

The trial has been plagued by delays and hold-ups, but was finally due to begin with jury selection on Friday (09May08) in Chicago, Illinois - six years (02) after the singer was initially charged with having sex with a minor.

But Kelly's lawyers have now asked for the trial to be temporarily delayed due to a recent "torrent of publicity" surrounding the case, which they feel could have a negative effect on the trial's outcome.

The 41-year-old has pleaded not guilty to 14 charges of child pornography, after a videotape emerged allegedly showing him having sex with an underage girl.

Miley Cyrus - Whos That Girl More Saucy Cyrus Snaps Online

Teen sensation MILEY CYRUS has been caught up in a fresh photo scandal after saucy shots of a girl, who resembles her, stripping have appeared online.

The snaps are similar to those which appeared on website MySpace.com last month (Apr08), and come just weeks after the 15 year old was forced to defend her decision to pose topless in a bedsheet for a Vanity Fair shoot.

In the new pictures, a girl bearing an uncanny likeness to Cyrus holds a t-shirt up with her teeth, showing a bare stomach and red panties.

According to blog Oceanup.com the snapshots were emailed to pop star Nick Jonas when the pair dated last year (07).

If the shots prove to be genuine, the pictures will further compromise her image as a child-friendly star, and pile pressure on her employers at Disney to address her penchant for posing provocatively.

Although Cyrus apologised for the Vanity Fair photoshoot, she refused to accept she shouldn't pose in private snaps.

After the last set of pictures appeared on MySpace, she said, "For me, I was like, `It's not a big deal.' But they got spread around. Like someone copied and pasted and said, 'Oh my God, look at this, and blah blah blah.'"

Janice Dickinson - Dickinson Attacks Rival Banks

Former supermodel JANICE DICKINSON has accused TV host TYRA BANKS of using her book to give young girls advice on sex and drug use.

The catty fashion queen hit out at her model rival after spotting a paparazzi photo of Banks in a magazine carrying a copy of her book, No Lifeguard on Duty.

DICkinson claims Banks is wrongly using her work to help young people - and taking credit for it, reports New York gossip column PageSix.com.

She says, "And she's using my book. I mean, the thing looks so worn it's like she's been reading it on the toilet. It's pathetic. Where's her originality? Does she have no shame?"

Yet another pseudonym for the work of Taylor Deupree (aka Taylor 808) and Savvas Ysatis (aka Omicron) -- that is, besides S.E.T.I.. and Arc -- Futique make the alias rather necessary, since the duo's corporeal is surprisingly different from their usual oversupply of sparse ambience. Hip-hop beatboxes and Crooklyn dub make appearances alongside the showy rhythms on Futique's debut, Luv Luv (recorded, as incessantly, for the Instinct label). Mr. So & So followed in 1996, and Go Low appeared three years afterward.
